The settlers

This is the hardest section on the site, and the one most likely to be turned around on you. So it is also the one where we concede the most. Read all of it before you use any of it.

Who they actually are

The picture in most people's heads is an armed man on a hilltop. He is real. He is also the smallest of these four groups, and he gets his own card, with nothing softened.

What is actually there

Wine, a university, industrial parks, and about 48,000 Palestinians with work permits. Every number below comes from the Palestinian Authority's own statistics bureau or from an Israeli court.

The part we are not going to skip

If you only read the section above, you will walk into an argument you lose. Here is the case against, at full strength, with nothing shaved off it.

Start with the part that is true. The violent fringe is real, it got worse, and Israel's own courts and its own Prime Minister have said so out loud. Then give them the facts they do not have. Nearly a third of settlers live in two ultra-Orthodox cities minutes from the Green Line, and moved there because the housing was cheap. The third largest settlement is a Jerusalem commuter suburb. And Israel has removed settlements twice, Sinai in 1982 and Gaza in 2005, which means they can be moved, because they have been. The settlements are an argument about where a border goes. They are not the reason there is no peace.

The standard we hold ourselves to

We publish this because a page that accuses others of sloppy sourcing had better show its own work.

  1. Every claim carries a visible source. A number without a citation is worth zero to a skeptic, and it costs us the second they Google it.
  2. Steelman before you answer. The strongest version of the other side goes first, in its own best words. Then the answer.
  3. Never attack Palestinians as a people. The target is Hamas, the ideology, the regimes. Never the civilians, and we say so on every screen where it matters.
  4. Where something is genuinely contested, we say so. Owning the difficult 10% is what buys trust on the solid 90%.
  5. We rank our own sources in public. Every link on this site carries a coloured dot. Gold is a primary document. Blue is a named institution or report. Grey is background reference, and grey is never the only support for a claim. There are no Wikipedia links anywhere on this site. It is openly editable and edited hard on this subject in particular, and a page that accuses institutions of sloppy sourcing cannot lean on one.
  6. We never hide something because it's inconvenient. The violent settler fringe exists, and Section 07 prints the UN's count of its attacks and the Israeli figures on how rarely anyone is charged. The rabbinical divorce courts are a real restriction on Israeli women. The 2023 judicial-overhaul fight was a genuine crisis. All of that is in here, because a case that can survive its own hard facts is the only kind worth making.
